By Tara Sanders
As I looked down at the words I wrote with a felt-tip pen on that small, smooth rock, I sighed.
Years had gone by since I first realized that my deepest struggle is one of identity. The words “not being enough” starred me in the face as I considered my deepest fears.
My small group started a book last week about dealing with fear. On the first week of the study, we each wrote down our greatest fear on a small, smooth stone that we placed in a glass jar. At the end of the study, we plan to throw the rocks in the water as a symbol of letting go of our fears.
As I sat there, I had to be honest. I had to think about my greatest fear. And those three words truly summed it up.
It boils down to identity.
As The Lipstick Campaign, we have built a community based on the idea that “Who You Are is Enough.” You must know that this is not because Marianne or myself have this all figured out. Quite the contrary. We are down in the trenches with you. We have felt the struggle of being too much and not enough at the same time. We have struggled to figure out our calling and our purpose. We have also felt the effects of the messages our society sends to women, and the negative perception of women even within the walls of the church.
This ministry is about conversations.
We began this journey as a way to start conversations about the parts of our lives that shape our identity. Whether its health and fitness, or grieving the loss of a loved one, we want to meet you where you are and create a safe space to express thoughts and feelings.
We also want to tell people the truth.
The truth is that who you are is enough. You are intricately and wonderfully made. You are not alone. You were created for more than just the endless, mundane days. You were created for relationship and for purpose. You are gifted and a vital part of your community.
When we are in the midst of the daily grind (and so busy we forget to shower) it's hard to see our endless days turn into something beautiful.
But know this...
Your life is worth living. Your purpose is worth fulfilling.
In the middle of the chaos of life, it's so hard to see the purpose and the fruitfulness of what you are striving to work toward on a daily basis. But it is not in vain.
We started this conversation because, after so many struggles, we realized that it was time to build community around truth. It was time to gather our people. It was time to give these topics a platform and to breach conversations about the things that impact us everyday.
We want to relate to you with our own stories.
I believed for a very long time that my worth was found in what I could accomplish and how closely I could follow the rules so I could look and act like a good Christian girl. What I didn't know then was that God was more concerned about my heart being righteous before Him than me simply being right.
Let's take this a step further.
Our mantra started out as "Who You Are Is Enough." But even more than that:
Who you are IN CHRIST is enough FOR THE BEAUTIFUL PURPOSE HE HAS FOR YOUR LIFE.
We want to help you see this truth...and not just see it...KNOW IT. We hope that this podcast is a cup overflowing with encouragement for you.
After passing our one-year anniversary, both Marianne and myself knew it was time to expand this thing. We plan to add a weekly devotional where we take a chunk of scripture and discuss it in detail, and we are starting this blog to keep the conversation going. This will be a place to hear more about the topics we discuss, and for some personal stories and thoughts from our guest podcasters.
We invite you to listen in, respond, tell us your story, engage and connect. You can write to us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We would love to hear from you and thank you for listening!
